76 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3- MONDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2010 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT x Cape Gazette l s the father of a 6- year-old girl, I am cer- tainly well versed in Lhe Disney princess iconography. I have even made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Orlando, Fla., to dine with highly profitable heroines of the Mouse House empire. e So when it was announced that another storybook sister would enter the animated brood, it was met with much an- ticipation in the household. And judging from "Tangled's" trail- ers, what's not to like about the arrival of Rapunzel to the clan? She seemed scrappy, sel[f-as- sured and hardly the distressed damsel that marked the earlier" princess canon. While Me film looked to play fast and lloose with its fairy-tale origins, it seemed to do so for all the right reasons (not, for example, to in- troduce some hip-hop sidekick or provide a musical showcase for a flavor-of-the month musi- ca] artist). And now, after walk- ing out of the theater with a very content little girl, I can't shake the feeling that while the film is a marked improvement from its non-Pixar output, "Tangled" felt needlessly unkempt. There's certainly no com- plaint with the film's flair. It's as lush as anything its sibling Pixar (also known as The Benchmark) has produced. And while the 3- D is engaging, it would remain equally stunning minus one of those dimensions. Its atteotion to detail is evident in every Pop starlet Mandy Moore gwes voice to Rapunzel, the princess stolen in inancy by Gothel, a self-serving witch who uses the child's magical locks as a folica]ly generated Botox. Zachary Levi (TV's "Chuck") no crown voices Flynn Rider, a bumbling, vain petty thief who happens upon Rapunzel's remote castle tower prison following a botched robbery. Both are sur- prisingly stronger than eJther's previous work would suggest. Throughout "TangIed,, though, a faint whiff of despera- tion beans early and grows more overpowering as it ram- bles along. It seems so demo- graphically calculated to appeal to every target audience seg- ment that it never really feels as if it gels together as a whole. One minute it's got the epic sweep of its predecessors, corn: plete with musical interludes (with fairly forgettable numbers from Disney mainstay Alan Menken) and romance, then it . shifts to slapstick with anthro- pomorphic animals straight out of Looney Tunes turf. From "Snow White ' to ' laddin," Dis- ney managed to juggle these ele- ments more subtly and success- fully. And "Tangled" tries, but never feels as though it commits to any of it. "Tangled" is a per- fectly acceptable holiday alter- native that will satisfy any princess-loving young member of your household, and older ewers can easily get lost in the animated opulence. But from its paint-by-numbers story to its hyperventilating need for across-the-boardac- ceptance, Disney's "Tangled" hands us its latest princess with- out letting her fully earn her crown, Movies )) The following movie listings include those of the Movies at Midway.
