t CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Dec. 6 - Dec. 12, 2002 - 29 Parade participants march down Rehoboth Avenue arm-in- arm to mark World AIDS Day. AIDS Day Continued from page 27 emerged from the call by the World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention in January 1988 to open channels of communication, strengthen the exchange of infor- mation and experience, and forge a spirit of social tolerance. Since then, World AIDS Day has received the support'of the World Health Assembly, the United Nations system, and gov- ernments, communities and indi- viduals around the world. Each year, it is the only international day of coordinated action against AIDS. In Rehoboth, the Service of Remembrance and Hope is the epitome of the goals of World AIDS Day, providing both time for sadness and reflection and time for hope in the future. During the service, the Reading of the Names of people who have died of HIV disease serves as a poignant reminder of the horrific reality of AIDS. "A few years ago, when the hor- rifying rate of AIDS deaths in this country began to slow down, the group of us working on World AIDS Day questioned whether we should continue to read the long list of names of our friends lost to AIDS over the years. We made the decision to go on with the reading and that year as I listened to the names being read, I knew we had made the right choice," said Archibald. "We speak these names each year so that we will not forget our loved ones, so that we will not for- get how they died, so that we will not give up our efforts to find an end to the AIDS epidemic, so that we will not. forget to tell our young people to be careful with their lives," he said.
