Stage Stores Inc. purchases Peebles department stores By Bridin Reynolds Hughes Peebles department store locat- ed in the Rehoboth Mall, is one the many successful smaller mar- ket stores that attracted buyers, Stage Stores inc. to the Peebles chain. Stage, which purchased the Peebles stores in November, owns 520 stores in 27 states and rings annual sales of approxi- mately $1.2 billion. Peebles has maintained a strong presence in the Cape Region mar- ket place through nearly two decades of growth and change. General manager Patty Allen said the new ownership is a good fit for Peebles and few changes will be apparent to customers. "Their philosophy of superior customer service is similar to ours; they have tended to stay in the same markets that we have. I'm very comfortable with the change," said Allen, who has over 10 years experience with Peebles. Allen said what will be appar- ent to customers is a long antici- pated renovation and expansion of the 40,000 square foot store. The renovation, which was under- way when the sale was made, in- cludes a new entrance and facade, new flooring and lighting and the addition of 2,500 square feet of shopping space. "We really needed it and we'd like to thank our customers for their loyalty during the renova- tions. Our sales were consistent during the renovation," she said. Allen said the Rehoboth Pee- bles caters to a local client base. "We don't have buses coming through. What separates us from others is our service and our con- sistency," said Allen, noting that the department store cosmetics counters are a significant draw for clients. Displays of Estee Lauder, Clin- ique and Elizabeth Arden are front and center in the store.
