January 1, 1998 Milton sailor seeks Michael Short photo NARFE Chapter 1690 installs officers The National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1690 (NARFE) Officers for 1998 were installed on Wednesday, Nov. 17, in a ceremony and holiday party at the BayCenter. An intersection of heightened readiness and fortuity. For sailors on the Navy destroyer USS Kinkaid, this electric point of con- vergence happens on an overseas deployment - out on the open ocean where the "hull slices the water." According to Seaman John H. Stubbs II, the 21-year-old son of John and Denise Stubbs of Milton, the importance of deploying Navy ships overseas can never be un- derestimated. STUBBS "It's impor- tant for Navy ships to deploy overseas to maintain forward presence and security of the sea lanes," said Stubbs, a 1995 gradu- ate of Cape Henlopen High School. Deployment presents a tough set of conditions that take some getting used to. While in the Gulf, Stubbs and the rest of the Kinkaid's crew will rely on sever- al months of intense pre-deploy- ment training to help enforce peace in the Middle East. "I've become more familiar with the ship-during the last sever- al months of training and I've also gained my diving qualifications," Stubbs said. Stubbs is currently conducting a six-m6nth deploy- ment to the Arabian Gulf on the Kinkaid. The Kinkaid is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots and can work with battle groups or alone in either coastal patrol or deep water. The 8,000-ton war- ship has a crew of 350 officers and sailors, and carries a mixture of air, surface and sub-surface weaponry, allowing it to effec- tively handle any adversary.
