The first floor of the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes is be- ing closed to the public in order to prepare for the new De- Braak exhibit. Zwaanendael Museum closes first floor to prepare for new DeBraak exhibit Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 6, all visitor operations at the Zwaanen- dael Museum will be conducted on the second floor of the muse- um. The first floor will be closed for approximately 12 weeks in order to prepare for a new exhibit that will feature conserved and never- before-exhibited items from the sunken brig DeBraak. The De- Braak is the British ship that sank in a brief, but violent, storm one mile from the coast of Cape Hen- lopen on May 25, 1798. The DeBraak was raised in 1986, after 188 years at the bot- tom of the. Atlantic Ocean. A spe- cial commemoration, with events honoring the fallen sailors, will be observed on May 25, 1998, the 200th year following the ship's sinking. Visitation at the museum is en- couraged while preparations for the new exhibit are underway, and several exhibits on the second floor will be featured. Access to the second floor gallery is by stairway. Group tours will contin- ue to be honored with the neces- sary logistic adjustment, staff will be available for special requests, and community service and out- reach will be maintained. Exhibits include "Great Guns at Night," pictures and information of the bombardment of Lewes during the War of 1812; informa- tion about the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse; History and Archae- ology of the Ryves Holt House in Lewes; the "Ever-Changing Coastline" at Cape Henlopen, and, through Feb. 15, "Music for Your Holidays."
