Former Vice President Jo- seph R. Biden has been traveling across the U.S. promoting his new book, "Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Pur- pose." Released Nov. 14, Biden's memoir chronicles the year fol- lowing Beau Biden's diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor. Beau, Joe's eldest son, passed away a year later, but not before telling his father, "Give me your word that no matter what happens, you're going to be all right." This book, written not just by a U.S. vice president, but by a father, grandfather, friend and husband, tells a story of how family and friendships sustain people, and how hope, purpose and action can guide people through the pain of personal loss into the light of a new future. Biden’s book tour, which kicked off with an interview by Oprah Winfrey in early Novem- ber, will have covered 19 cities across 14 states, and Washington, D.C., by the time he returns to Delaware. Additional locations for 2018 will be added. The Delaware State Chamber of Commerce organizers are honored that the former vice president and Delaware senator will keynote their 181st Annual Dinner Monday, Jan. 8, during his time home. "The Delaware State Chamber of Commerce is one of the most storied institutions in our state's history. I'm looking forward to speaking at this year's annual dinner and once again being at home with so many longtime friends," said Biden. Biden represented Delaware for 36 years in the U.S. Senate before becoming the 47th vice president of the United States. As vice president, he demonstrat- ed his leadership on important issues facing the nation, and represented this country abroad, traveling over 1.2 million miles to more than 50 countries. Biden convened sessions of the presi- dent's cabinet, led interagency efforts, and worked with Con- gress to raise the living standards of middle-class Americans, reduce gun violence, address violence against women, and end cancer. He graduated from the University of Delaware and Syra- cuse Law School, and served on the New Castle County Council. At age 29, he became one of the youngest people ever elected to the United States Senate, serv- ing 17 years on the Judiciary Committee and 12 years on the Foreign Relations Committee. The annual dinner is the larg- est of the state chamber's annual events, drawing over 900 busi- ness leaders, dignitaries and elected officials. The evening's program also will include the presentation of the Josiah Marvel Cup Award to honor the memory of Josiah Marvel, who reorga- nized and was the first president of the modern-day state chamber.
