Above, awaiting the Shelton family and friends to arrive, Jan. 12, for the burial of their 11 loved ones who died in a house fire, Jan. 3, Haromny United Methodist Church ceme- tery chairperson Preston Morris kept a quiet vigil over the grave sites in the Shelton family plot. The fatal fire was the worst in Delaware history. At top right, a procession of hearses from Miller Funeral Services in Milford delivered the Shelton fire victims to their final resting place at Harmony Cemetery on Townsend Road west of Oak Orchard• Many firefighters from Indian River VFC and Millsboro VFC donned formal dress uniforms to serve as pall bearers. An outpouring of community support brought many local donations to the Shelton family. Pennsyl- vanian James Paulits of the Paulits Foundation covered all funeral expenses with a $50,000 donation. At right, Shelton family survivors sat at graveside in Har- mony Cemetery while hundreds of friends and local residents gathered nearby. Rev. John Wesley Shelton Jr., son of 83-year- old Evelyn Shelton who died with 10 other family members in the fire at her Rosedale home, thanked the community for its support. %Ve are sad at our family's loss," said Shelton. Kenny Vincent said he supports the traf- fic light at Bayard Avenue. "They are putting the traffic light where ! suggested. It is a wider street. There are less people there and the homes are farther apart," Vincent said. "However, a light anywhere is better than no light at all." John Cooper said he liked most of what he saw, especially the sidewalk plans. "I think either way [either traffic light location] is a plus." However, Iongtime traffic light advocates Joanne and Mike De- Fiore were very upset with pllac- ing the traffic light at Bayard. Joanne DeFiore, perhaps the ,,sin- gle most vocal advocate for more attention for the "forgotten miile," said "I cannot see where this light is going to help at all." "The only people it helps are,, the people in Dewey Beach," :she said, arguing that residential areas 3 BR, 3 BA, AC, short distance to the beach. Completely r carpet. Must to appreciate. She said only the area south of the light would benefit. Marguerite Iandolo agreed. "Dodd is a straight shot [from Dodd to Cullen]. It was the logical place...I'm sure the light will help someone, but it will not solve the problem of pedestrians crossing to go to the beach from the motels." Bellinger's Jewelers owner Dale Bellinger said that the inconven- ience and cost of such work must always be weighed carefully. While supporting safety improve- ments, he worried about the im- pact of a long road project. "I am not looking forward to it," he said. Dewey Beach Commissioner Pat Wright said she likes the side- walks. She preferred the Bayard Avenue traffic light alternative be- cause it is such a busy intersec- tion. It Will Resist The Wind.
