Cats crowned with Lewes support
A dinner at the Rose & Crown Restaurant to raise funds for the Historic Lewes Cat Society
raised a total of $628.50 Jan. 14, when the restaurant contributed 50 percent of its dinner-
cheek proceeds to the organization. Linda Rainey of First Atlantic Mortgage Company won
the 50/50 raffle that netted $88.50. The society is raising funds to reach its goal of containing
the feral cat population through initiating trapping, spaying or neutering, socializing and
finding homes for the felines. John Lester, owner of the restaurant, also agreed to engage in
another benefit dinner for the society from 5 to 9 p.m., May 6.
To date, the society has trapped 43 cats, spayed or neutered 20 and found homes for 12. Cur-
rently the society has nine felines ready for adoption: two kittens, two adult males and five
adult females. Twenty-two others are being socialized in preparation for adoption. Society
members shown with the three kittens who waited in the hallway outside the restaurant to
greet patrons at the fundraiser are (l-r) Florence Marshall, trapper, Judy Hedrick, secretary
and trapper; Kate Dooley, public relations; and Vivian Barry, cochair.
The Historic Lewes Cat Society, in conjunction with Doris Day Spay Day, will conduct its
next spay/neuter program from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27, in front of Sugar & Spice on
Second Street in Lewes. Society members will have certificates for spaying or neutering dis-
counts at participating veterinary clinics. For more information or to become involved in the
society, call 228-6792.
