Marine archaeology class offered in Bethany
The Delaware Marine Archaeological Society
(DMAS), in cooperation with the Maritime Archaeo-
logical and Historical Society (MAHS), will offer a
comprehensive 10-week course, "Dving into Histo-
ry," starting at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 19, in the meeting
room of the South Coastal Library, 43 Kent Avenue,
Bethany Beach.
Successful completion and certification will quali-
fy graduates as archaeological assistants on actual
expeditions and projects. The program includes ship
architecture, site surveying and mapping, underwater
photography, law and ethics, research, remote sens-
ing and artifact conservation.
DMAS graduates recently participated in a survey
of a 19th century wooden shipwreck on Beach Plum
Island in close cooperation with the MAHS, Mary-
land state archaeologist Dr. Susan Langley and
Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural affairs
officials.
A major Australian university has recently recog-
nized the Diving into History video course for its
unique content and effectiveness as the first of its
kind in underwater archaeology. The cost of the
course is $150 per person or $250 per married cou-
ple, including materials. For more information

Rose E. Stephenson,
retired from Sun Oil
Rose Elizabeth Stephenson, of
Millsboro and formerly of Wilm-
ington, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001
in Beebe Medical Center.
Mrs. Stephenson graduated
from ChiChester High School in
1949. She retired from Sun Oil
Co. as a data processor. She was a
lifelong resident of Wilmington
and moved to Millsboro after her
retirement2
She is survived by her husband
of 48 years, Harold Stephenson;
her daughters, Beverly and her
husband Robert Hohn of Mills-
boro, and Cindy of Newark; a sis-
tel Dorothy Smith and her hus-
band Harold; her granddaughters,
Jeanette of Harbeson and Melissa
of Millsboro; and three great-
grandchildren.
Services were held at McCrery
Memorial Chapel, with burial in
Gracelawn Memorial Park.

Bishop James E. Hanzer,
retired church official
Bishop James E. Hanzer, 78, of
Georgetown, died Friday, Jan. 5,
2001, at Beebe Medical Center.
Bishop Hanzer graduated from
Ellendale High School. He did
farm work and truck driving for
L.D. Caulk Co., retiring after 22
years. In the 1960s, he built St.
Mary Holiness Church in George-
town and in the 1970s, he became
vice bishop for Welcome Full
Gospel Holiness Church in
Slaughter Neck. He later became
bishop for St. Mary Holiness
Church and the Welcome Full
Gospel Holiness Church.
He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Rosemarie Williams,
and by two brothers and a sister.
He is survived by his wife, Oad-
er L. Hanzer of Georgetown; four
sons, Timothy of Millsboro,
James of Felton, Paul of Seaford
and Bernard of Richmond, Va.;
four daughters, Mary Hanzer of
Columbia, S.C., Giadys Johnson
of Dover, Lorraine Harris of
Dover; and Barbara Hanzer of
Seaford; two sisters and their hus-
bands, Marguerite and Bermis
Duff), of Milton and Betty and
Coley Winstead of Boston, Mass.;
a sister-in-law, Chattie Sabb of
Georgetown; 31 grandchildren;
and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Welcome
Full Gospel Holiness Church in
Slaughter Neck, with burial in
People Memorial Park, Lewes.
John J. McNeilly
Supreme Court justice
John J. McNeilly, 82, of Re-
hoboth Beach, died of natural
causes Thursday, Jan. 1 I, 2001, in
Lewes.
Justice McNeilly was a 1936
graduate of Seaford High School
and a 1940 graduate of Duke Uni-
versity in Durham, N.C. He began
studying law at the University of
Pennsylvania, but joined the U.S.
Navy following the attack on
Pearl Harbor in 1941. He was
commissioned an ensign in July
1942, and served two years in the
Southwest Pacific Theater, where
he commanded an LCI in the New
Guinea campaign, prior to the in-
vasion of the Philippines.
After the war, he returned to
Penn Law School, where he grad-
uated in 1948. Admitted to the
Delaware Bar in 1949, he engaged
in private practice in Georgetown
until 1963. During that period, he
also served four years as Deputy
Attorney General in Sussex Coun-
ty. Gov. Carvei appointed him to
the Delaware Superior Court in
1963, and Gov. Tribbett appointed
him to the Supreme Court in 1975,
where he served until his retire-
ment in 1986.
During his almost 24 years of
judicial service, half as a trial
judge and half on the appellate
level, he displayed the courage of
a battle veteran and the wisdom
garnered from his Georgetown
private practice and trial experi-
ences. His case loads ranged from
minor criminal offenses to impor-
tant, broad reaching civil litiga-
tion to first degree murder indict-
ments. He was an avid sportsman
and hunter, a former member of
the Rehoboth Beach Yacht &
Country Club and a former mem-
ber of the board of directors of
Beebe Hospital.
He married Mary Helen Mc-
Dermott of Georgetown in 1944.
They had two daughters, Carol
McNeilly Emmert of Rehoboth
Beach and Ann McNeiily Solli of
Lutherville, Md. Mrs. McNeilly
died in 1980.
Justice McNeiily is also sur-
vived by five grandchildren: John
T. Wakefield and E Grier Wake-
field of Wilmington; Christy
Wooton of Lutherville, Md.,
William D. Emmert Jr. of Re-
hoboth Beach, and Alexandra Sol-
li of Lutherville; and three great-
grandchildren, Ellie Wakefield,
Grier Wakefield and Amanda
Wakefield, all of Wilmington.
Services were held at St.
George's Episcopal Church, An-
gola, with burial in All Saints
Cemetery, Angola.

al Homes & Crematc-ium, Lewes.
Betty Simon,
worked for Perdue
Betty Simon, 62, of Milton,
died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, of car-
diac arrest in Beebe Medical Cen-
ter, Lewes.
Mrs. Simon was born in Tri-
nadad. She was employed by Per-
due Farms Inc. and was a member
of St. Jude's Catholic Church,
Route I.
She is survived by her husband,
Stanley W. Simon; three sons,
Waynesley of Georgetown, Tha-
rane of Trinidad and Robert of
Houston, Texas; two daughters,
Trajean Cornish of Salisbury, Md.
and Grenda Coombs of Lincoln; a
brother, Sahadeo Rampersad of
Trinidad; two sisters, Theodora
Simon of Rehoboth Beach and
Sharma Rampersad of Trinidad;
13 grandchildren; a great-grand-
child; and several sons-in-law,
daughters-in-law, nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
Services were held at St. Jude's
Catholic Church, with burial in
Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.
Jill BartT, Bryon Burton engaged
Mr. and Mrs. Richard P. Barry of Millsboro are pleased to
announce the engagement of their daughter, Jill Barry of Re-
hoboth Beach, to Bryon Burton of Rehoboth Beach, the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Burton, also of Rehoboth Beach.
The bride-to-be is a 1993 graduate of Cape Henlopen High
School in Lewes and a 1997 graduate of Salisbury State Uni-
versity, Salisbury, Md. She is employed as a property manag-
er by Property Management Professionals Inc. in Rehoboth
Beach.
The groom-elect is a 1996 graduate of Cape Henlopen High
School, Lewes. He is employed as a manager of SuperFresh
Foods Inc. of Rehoboth Beach.
A September 2001 wedding is planned.
