Bishop to celebrate union at Barratt's Chapel
Barratt's Chapel, a United Methodist church landmark, on Rt. 113,
Frederica, will be the site for a special service at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan.
21. The service will celebrate the inclusiveness of United Methodist
people, enabling United Methodists on Delmarva to know and appreci-
ate the journey to inclusiveness the church has traveled over the 216
years since Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury's historic meeting at Bar-
ratt's Chapel. The observance is more of a reunion than a union, with
Salisbury. Md. native Bishop Ernest Shaw Lyght, resident bishop of the
New York area, as the guest speaker. Prior to his election to the epis-
copacy in 1996, the bishop served with distinction as a pastor and dis-
trict superintendent of the New Jersey conferences. Everyone is invit-
ed to attend the service.
De la Huerta to speak in Rehoboth Feb. 3
New Realities and Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) will host
Christian de la Heurta, best selling author of the book "Coming Out
Spiritually: The Next Step," at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb, 3, at Ocean Wave
Lodge, MCC's worship center, on Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach. Fol-
lowing his lecture, there will be a special reception to meet the author
and a book signing. Admission is $15 at the door on a first come, first
served basis. Chosen by "Publisher's Weekly" as one of the 10 best re-
ligious books of 1999 and nominated for a Lambda Literary Award,
"Coming Out Spiritually" has been a galvanizing force for the gay/les-
bian/bisexual/transgenered (GLBT) community across the nation and
world as it seeks to integrate sexuality and spirituality. De la Huerta,
founder and executive director of Q-Spirit, an international network of
gays and lesbians in spirituality, documents the fact that in most cul-
tures of the world GLBT people were the spiritual leaders and healers
of the tribe and encourages spiritual seekers among today's GLBT
community to reclaim their sacred heritage. In so doing, he describes
10 spiritual roles such as shaman, healer, creator of beauty and media-
tor. New Realities is a spiritually based organization that offers month-
ly lectures and programs for those interested in spiritual growth and
transformation, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or faith.
MCC is a member congregation of the Universal Fellowship of Metro-
politan Community Churches, founded in 1968. Worship services are
held at 9 and I I a.m., every Sunday, at Ocean Wave Lodge.
