Gertie's expands line
to include organic fish
By Bridin Reynolds-Hughes
When Gertie Hillman-Cerney,
proprietor of Gertie's Green Gro-
cer in Lewes. spied a state-posted
sign warning against consuming
fish from the waters of Lewes
Beach, she knew there was anoth-
er obstacle of natural health and
healing to overcome.
"We have to worry when we are
finding fish with lesions and frogs
with three legs in our back yard,"
said Hillman-Cerney, a certified
nutritionist, clinical herbalist and
former nurse. "Frogs are to envi-
ronmentalists what canaries were
to the miners."
Hillman-Cerney looked to a
source she knows well - organics.
She researched and found the
Wildfish Seafood Cooperative of
Alaska and is now offering their
coho. sockeye salmon, halibut and
yeilowfin tuna.
"It is phenomenal. There is no
offshore drilling where they fish,
so it is free from industrial and
population compromises." she
said. Salmon is particularly rich
in omega-3 oils that have proven
benefits of protecting and treating
cardiovascular diseases and low-
ering cholesterol levels, fibrino-
gen levels and high blood pres-
sure.
The Wildfish Seafood Coopera-
tive maintains ownership of the
fish from the point of catch to the
point of sale including catching,
handling, icing and delivering to
rare sources such as Gertie's. All
of their seafood meets or exceeds J
Farm Verified Organic's (FVO)
standards and the cooperative is
the only one in Northern Alaska to
bleed its salmon. The wild fish
are not treated with the additives
and chemicals seafood farms uti-
lize to enhance color and force
growth.
"This s an important economic
decision for them as well, and we
want to support it," said Bruce
Mead, store manager. Wildfish
Seafood Cooperative is commit-

the fish and the livelihoods of the
