native Alaskan and Pacific North-
western fishermen, and 45 percent
of the profits go directly to sup-
port 17 coastat #daskan villages.
"When man gets hold of the
food supply and starts to farm it
then considerations of conven-
ience and cheap production take
preference over health benefits.
This is what has happened in the
fishing industry," said Udo Eras-
mus, international author and nu-
tritionist.
Erasmus strongly advocates the
organic handling by Wildfish
Seafood Cooperative and asserts
Bristol Bay has the cleanest wa-
ters in the world.
"We are living in burdened
times with the increasing amount
of toxins. Recently the FDA
[Federal Food & Drug Adminis-
tration] approved meat and poul-
try safe to eat that contains cancer,
open sores, infectious arthritis,
diseases caused by intestinal
worms, iymphoma and poultry
that contains pneumonia bacteria.
Washing it doesn't take it off,"
said Hillman.
"Sustainability means improv-
ing the quality of human life while
living within the carrying capacity
of the earth's finite resources.
"It means meeting the needs of
the present generation without
compromising the ability of the
future generations to meet their
needs," reads the cooperative's
mission.
The educated staff of Gertie's

protecting and working with the
earth. Staff members can even
help with menu planning and one-
stop shopping.
Try pairing the Wildfish with
organic vegetables, local hearth
baked DiBonaventure bread and
even herbal beer and organic cof-
fee with soy milk, which are all
available in the store.
"Gertie has nurtured this store.
She was educating people before
these items were popular. She is
known as the flax oil queen of the
East Coast; people think it is a
miracle tonic," said Mead.
Gertie's other natural miracles
include wheat and gluten-free
foods, organic cheeses, meats and
meat substitutes, essential oils,
aroma treatments, natural skin-
care products and hair-care prod-
ucts.
Hillman-Cerney has also added
her own line of vitamins and
herbals that afford the same quali-
ty as in other top lines at a lower
price, because there are no adver-
tising costs to absorb.
Gertie's is the only local retailer
that offers an organic cooperative
group. "It is simple and you can
have quality organic foods for a
price comparable to what you pay
for the pesticide produce found in
the big stores," she said.
