Jen Elllngsworth photo Long Neck Business Assoeation board members and busi- ness owners watched as (l-r) Joe Shoup, chairman of the board and past president; Charlie Goepel, founder and hon- orary member; and Roberta McWilliams, president; cut the ribbon on the group's new headquarters in Palmer's Shop- ping Center on Route 23. COLDLUeLL BANKER O Long Neck Business Association unveils new headquarters By Jen Ellingsworth Thirteen years after its incep- tion, the Long Neck Business As- sociation (LNBA) cut the ribbon Jan. 15 on its new headquarters, an office on Long Neck Road (Route 23) on the second floor of Palmer's Shopping Center. The association works to in- form the Long Neck community about the area's businesses and services, said Roberta McWilliams, LNBA president. She said the new office is a natu- ral progression for the group, a more than 100-member organiza- tion that constantly strives to at- tain a high profile in the Long Neck community and Sussex County. An independent association af- filiated with the Greater Mills- boro Chamber of Commerce, LN- BA was founded in 1985 by Char- lie Goepel, who said the group started with 31 members. Upon his retirement as president in the late 1980s, Goepel said the mem- bership had reached 107. "We had our highs and lows," said Goepel, now an honorary member. "When it started it was mainly only Long Neck business- es. Now it has expanded some- what to include other businesses from throughout the county." The group, which is governed by a six member board, meets the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at a local restaurant, said McWilliams, who added that the gatherings are informal, friendly meetings during which members can network, trade ideas and so- cialize. To become involved, members pay a $50 annual fee with a one-time initiation fee of $20. The association also has honorary memberships for certain individuals and non-profit organi- zations, she said. Other board members include Joe Shoup, chairman of the board and past president; Diane Shoup, vice president; Sandy Fullmer, secretary; Cindy Wilton, treasur- er; and Jim Beattie, promotional secretary. Members are asked to supply materials from their respective businesses to be included in a welcome packet for local Realtors to distribute to new residents. At the grand opening, McWilliams pointed out items that are current- ly included in the packages, such as promotional magnets, gift cer- tificates and brochures. She also noted that LNBA members are encouraged to share the duty of decorating the office with materi- als from their businesses, such as pictures and awards. "We want this to be a type of showplace for the members," said McWilliams. Speaking about the evolution of LNBA, Goepel said Long Neck remains a close-knit community with small businesses that strive to promote the uniqueness of the area and its individuality. The or- ganization is also involved with several community events, pro- moting programs such as Christ- mas Caroling on Long Neck and Labor Day Long Neck Style. In addition, LNBA frequently donates to charitable organiza- tions, said McWilliams. Most re- cently, the group provided toys for needy families during the hol- idays. Delmarva and WBOC raise thousands for charity For more than 10 years, WBOC-TV has organized a Bless Our Chil- dren campaign, which urges the people of Delmarva to open their hearts and provide a happy holiday for children who would otherwise go without. This year, the overwhelming support of people across the Peninsula raised $19,875. The donations were used to purchase toys and presents for children who might not have had anything to open dur- ing holiday celebrations. The funds were distributed to 15 charities in nine counties on Delmarva. IN-TOWN LEWES 125 WASHINGTON AVE. COUNTRY RANCHER... ON 2 LOTS Charming 3 story home converted into 2 apartments.
