CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Jan. 19 - Jan. 25, 2001 - 59 t00RTS & ENTERTAINMENT Steppin' Out Push Star,,;, Harmony Riley headed to Dogfish Jan. 19 By Jen Ellingsworth In a special performance slated Friday, Jan. 19 at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, 320 Rehoboth Ave,, Harmony Riley, a Chicago- based trio, and The Push Stars, winners of the Debut Album of the Year-Major Label nod from the Boston Music Awards, will take the stage starting at 10 p.m. Proving they can hardly be con- sidered fledgling performers, both young acts drew critical acclaim for their debut efforts and, hailing from their respective music mec- cas of Chicago and Boston, each band has distinguished itself as a new, fresh sounds among the masses. The Push Stars, who will headline the show, have seen national attention by having their songs included in three Farrelly Brothers hit movies, including "Dumb and Dumber, .... There's Something About Mary" and "Me, Myself and Irene." The sultry vocal stylings of Mary Ann Redmond will be center stage Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19-20, at Sydney's Blues & Jazz Restaurant, where the singer will perform with gui- tarist Mike Ault. Commenting on the inclusion of the songs in the films, Peter Farrelly said, "The Push Stars are one of our favorite bands. Their album ["After the Party," the band's debut release on Capitol Records] is phenomenal." Tunes by the Push Stars can also be heard on hit TV shows, including "Malcolm in the Middle," "All My Children," "Popular" and "ER." While the Push Stars, which include singer/guitarist Chris Trapper, drummer Ryan MacMillan and bass player Dan McLoughlin, have performed before at Dogfish, fans can look for new material this time out, including tunes from its upcoming release, "Opening Time," due out in February. An ambitious touring schedule has the band performing alongside the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Better Than Ezra, Julian Lennon, Candlebox and Third Eye Blind. Nominated as Best Rock Entertainer by the Chicago Music Awards in 1999 (other nominees included Wilco and the now- defunct Smashing Pumpkins), Harmony Riley has spent the past two years on the road with acts including John Popper of Blues Traveler and Cheap Trick. While it is difficult to pinpoint an exact genre of musical style, the trio, which includes guitarist/vocalist Miles Nielsen, bass player/vocal- ist Bighed and drummer/percus- sionist Doxx Nielsen, blends ele- ments of rock, blues, soul and jazz for an original sound that has attracted positive press from crit- ics nationwide. Harmony Riley's most recent recording endeavor is the four- track debut EP, aptly titled "Four Songs." The band also posts a website, complete with a chat room, mailing list, photos and tour dates at www.harmonyriley.com. For more information about the show at Dogfish Head, call 226- BREW.
