RAL goes to England and Greece for 'Shirley Valentine'
When the show "Shirley Valen-
tine" opens on Saturday, Feb. 10,
at the Rehoboth Art League's
Chamber Studio, the stage at the
rustic Rehoboth location will be
transformed into the kitchen of a
London fiat. And that's just for
Act One. By the time intermission
is over, the audience will be trans-
ported to beach on a Greek island.
Set designer Don Gardiner is
hard at work putting the illusions
together as actress Caren Anton
and director Fay Jacobs collabo-
rate on the script for the show.
With less the 48 hours between a
Friday, Feb. 1, dance concert and
the beginning of a week of inten-
sive rehearsal for the show, tools
and scenery will be flying over at
the Art League on that first week-
end in February. Used to quick set
ups, Gardiner and his crew have
already done all the planning and
will be ready for the quick change
to Shirley's habitat.
"Shirley Valentine," a very fun-
ny and heart-warming one-
woman show about a woman who
longs to expand the boundaries of
her life, will play for three per-
formances only at the Art League
on Feb. 10-11. Written by Willy
Russell, the show follows a mid-
dle aged British wife and mother
from the kitchen of her small Eng-
lish flat to the sun-drenched
beaches of Greece. It's a hilarious
and heart-felt journey as actress
Caren Anton brings the character
to life. The show will be present-
ed at 8 p.m. Feb. 10 and at 1 and 4
p.m. on Feb. 11 in the Chambers
Studio at the Rehoboth Art
League. Tickets are $10 and
reservations may be made by call-
ing 227-8408.
Caren Anton will be appearing
through the courtesy of Actor's
Equity Association, the Union of
Professional Actors and Stage
Managers in the United States.
Anton's credits include theatre,
television and films, ranging from
comedy to classics. She's ap-
peared to rave reviews in Wash-
ington, DC at the Washington
Shakespeare Company, Source
Theatre, Horizons Theatre and
more. Her TV credits include
"Homicide: Life on the Street.'"
"The Washington Post" has
called Anton's performances
"graceful and intelligent." Post
critic Lloyd Rose said "Anton
knows what she's doing!" and
"The Washington Times" deemed
her performance in "Kindertrans-
port" as "the most stirring stuff of
the night."
Jacobs, whose theatrical resume
includes more than 25 years of
professional productions in the
Washington, D.C. area was last
represented at the beach with the
sold-out run of "Love Letters" at
the Art League and the musical re-
vue "Razzle Dazzle" at La Rosa
Negra Restaurant in Lewes.
"Shirley Valentine" will be pre-
sented at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb.
RAL offers winter children's art classes
Chase away children's winter
blues by enrolling them in Re-
hoboth Art League's Saturday
winter art classes.
Classes will be held Saturdays
on the following dates: Feb. 3, 10,
17, 14; March 3, 10, and 17 in the
Chambers Studio at the Rehoboth
Art League.
Class projects for February will
be based on the Cultural Exhibit
in the Homestead. Students will
learn about India, its many cul-
tures, art and people. This will be
enhanced by related music, visu-
als and conversation during the
creative process.
Individuality will be stressed
rather than step-by-step instruc-
tions. Creativity will be encour-
aged rather than the seeking of a
specific final product. All activi-
ties will be age-appropriate and
have a flexible level of skill re-
quired for success. A positive, ex-
ploratory atmosphere will be
maintained, coupled with as
much art skill knowledge and
training as the student desires.
The cost is $10 for members of
the Rehoboth Art League and $13
for nonmembers. Students ages 4-
7 meet from 10 to 10:45 a.m.;
ages 8-12 meet from 11 a.m. to
12:30 p.m.. Classes size is limited
to 10 students so it is important to
sign up early. Tuition must ac-
company registration and only

accepted by phone. To register,
