Resi- dents of the Cape Region can show off their best chess moves at the Americlnn Lodging National Chess Tournament, one of the largest-ever amateur chess tour- naments. The tournaments will take place locally on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Americlnn, 329 Z Airport Road in Rehoboth. The Americlnn Lodging System will host the chess tournaments across the country from January to March. Ann Watkins is excited to have the opportunity to introduce rest- dents to Americlnn's dedication to providing guests with a quiet night's stay and on being an ac- tive member in the local commu- nity, where guests can have fun during their stay and experience quiet times for reading, sleeping and even playing chess. "It's a great pleasure to host the Americlnn Lodging National Chess Tournament in Rehoboth Beach," Watkins said. "We want everyone to appreciate the special features and construction that make Americlnn the perfect ven- ue for a chess tournament or any other event that requires a quiet environment - including a quiet night's stay." Designed for the casual chess player, participants can compete for a chance to play in the nation- al tournament to be held in March in Minneapolis. The winners from the local tournament, four adults and four youth, will advance to the regional tournament to be held in February at participating Americlnns. Regional winners will then advance to the national tournament where one adult and one youth will be named the '70s Soul Jam set for Dover Downs Slots Jan. 26-27 The Dramatics, The Manhat- tans and Harold Melvin's Blue Notes will grace the Dover Downs Slots stage tbr two nights in January. Following the over- whelming success of last year's '70s Soul Jam, a new combination of legendary R&B groups will be appearing Jan. 26 and 27, 2001. The shows begin at 9 p.m. The Dramatics, known as one of the most distinctive and suc- cessful soul vocal groups of all time, are back after a four-year hiatus and a newly recorded al- bum. Their combination of dis- tinctive harmonies and choreogra- phy has always been the forte of this Detroit-based group. Origi- nally formed in 1962, their list of hits includes "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get," "In the Rain," "Hey You, Get Off My Moun- tain," "Me and Mrs. Jones," and "Shake it Well." After a four-year hiatus, five members of the Dramatics return with a new album. Lenny Mayes, William "Weegee" Howard, Willie Ford, L.J. Reynolds and Ran Banks have reunited to create Somewhere in Time (A Dramatic Reunion) for Fantasy Records. The long-awaited reunion albam is thoroughly contemporary, yet remains true to the full, versatile sound that made the group a ma- jor force in popular music. The Manhattans, with their smooth, polished and heartfelt harmonies, bring their wealth of hits to this exciting show. The Grammy, Gold and Platinum award-winning Manhattans have sold more than 12 million records with hits such as "Kiss And Say Goodbye," "There's No Me With- out You," "Don't Take Your Love," and the classic "Shining Star." Since 1990, The Manhattans have performed throughout the United States and Canada. Their latest album, "Now," offers listen- ers 12 newly recorded songs in- cluding the gospel classic "Touch The Hem Of His Garment," and "Save The Best For Last," a pas- sionate original song. Harold Melvin's Blue Notes have created many classic hits that have stood the test of time. Their hits include "The Love I Lost," "Bad Luck," Wake Up Everybody," and the classic mil- lion-seller "If You Don't Know Me By Now." Although Harold Melvin passed away in 1997, the influ- ence he had on the Blue Notes re- mains strong. The current mem- bers of Harold Melvin's Blue Notes include Donnell Gillipie, Rufus Throne, Dwight Johnson, Tony Brooks, Robert Owens and Nate Brown. They work to "'keep his dream alive and continue climbing towards the mountain top that Harold started." Tickets for the show cost $30 to $55. For more information visit www.doverdowns.com.
