76 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Jan. 19 - Jan. 25, 2001
Larry Miller slips by a Laurel defender in action last Tues-
day night.

"This was a big win for us
tonight," coach Jerry Peden said
with a straight face. "Our kids
have really been playing well.
Those two loses to powerful
teams from New Jersey in the
Slam Dunk hurt us, but we're
making our way back."
The Vikings led 34-20 at half-
time, although Laurel showed
spurts of playing well. The sec-
ond half was just Cape pulling
away on a slow drive to victory.
"Last year our top eight players
were seniors and we went 14-9,"
said Laurel coach B.J. Joseph,
now in his fourth season. "We
don't start a single senior, but

BRANDON WELLING
The transfer senior Cape
grappler in the 119- pound
weight class has been com-
ing on strong in the middle
of the season. Brandon won
a 14-2 major decision last
Wednesday at Laurel, his
third impressive victory in a
row. "Brandon is a tough
kid who works real hard in
practice," said coach Chris
Mattioni. "He has an attack
style which is what we're
looking for." Welling is 10-9
on the season and 4-2 in con-
ference competition.
ANDRE DUNNING
One might be tempted to
call Andre "The Giant"; this
brawny 6-foot-3 post player
may be a "space eater" but
he has soft hands, great
touch and natural instincts
to be in the right spot. And
he will never back down!
Cape has won three in a row
since Andre has been insert-
ed into the starting lineup.
Along with Thaddeus Shock-
ley, Dewayne Hollomon and
Pat Jackson, Cape has be-
come a first class rebound-
ing team.

impressive win over the Bulldogs.
that's only part of the problem.
We just don't have the fire that I'm
looking for. It's been very disap-
pointing."
Andre Dunning put together a
solid effort for Cape under the
basket scoring 15 points. Matt
Duffield came off the bench to
contribute 12.
Cape was on the road Thursday,
Jan. 18, at Indian River before re-
turning home to host once-beaten
Sussex Central this Saturday, Jan.
20.
"It's time to test how far we've
actually come," said Woods. "I'm
looking forward to the challenge.
I think the whole team wants to
prove we can play with the better
teams in the conference."
The loss dropped Laurel to 3-9
on the season.
JACK McPIKE
During December's
Delaware State Swimming
Championships, this eight-
year-old won the 25, 50, 100
and 200-meter freestyle
events along with the 100
and 200-meter individual
medley races. Wait, that's
not all! He also captured the
25 and 50-meter breast-
stroke events on his way to
the High Point Award for 8
and under boys (Guess so!).
Jack swims for the Sussex
Family YMCA Seagulls and
set team records in 10 of 11
events he competed in.
ELIZABETH PURNELL
Daddy was a Rehoboth
Beach lifeguard and morn is
one of the Yeager girls from
the Cape State Park beach,
so you know this freshman
had to grow up and become
a swimmer. Elizabeth is not
only strong and talented, but
has mastered the sport's
toughest strokes. Last week
against Lake Forest 'qLizzy"
won both the 100-meter but-
terfly and 100-meter back-
stroke.

attended as a member of the Ti-
tans extended family. Four days
of food and lodging and $500 of
spending money along with un-
limited access to team functions is
the only way to do this game. To
my knowledge, each player gets
12 tickets and may bunk all 12 at
the family-designated NFL hotel.
How many distant relatives of the
Luke Petitigout family have they
heard from this week? And what
about former Sussex Central High
School football coach Howie
Reed? You know Howie's going
to Tampa if he has to fly the plane
himself!
SNIPPETS - The 100 or more
loyal basketball fans from Slaugh-
ter Neck have disappeared from
the radar screen. Some coaches
have all the luck! What does that
tell you? It tells me that most of
these entertaining fans were
Slaughter fans first and Cape fans
second. Thaddeus Shockley is
"Real Neck," according to junior
varsity player DameU Parker, but
Thaddeus can't put butts in the
seats the way someone named
Hazzard can.
Preseason college lacrosse has
started two-a-day practices. Ma-
lik Lopez,
Scott Steele
and Matt Hall
are all in camp
with the Divi-
sion I UMBC
Retrievers.
UMBC opens
the season in
late February at
the Naval LOPEZ
Academy. The true fans all wear
shorts to the February games. The
Wesley Wolverines have former
Cape players Josh Wyatt, Billy
Brennan, Der-
rick Quillen
and Greg
Plummer.
Plummer has
come from
nowhere to be
the team's third
rated long pole.
Logan Short
PLUMlVIER has been
switched from attack to midfield
and won the team bench press
competition for repping his own
weight. Vir-
ginia Wesleyan
has Jack Lingo,
Billy Lingo,
Rich Welsh
and Corey Ma-
honey on the
roster. David
Steele and Jim-
my Carpenter B. LINGO
are playing
club ball at ECU when they're not
surfing. And when they're not do-
ing either of those things they
concentrate on school. Wait!
Move girls into the third position.
Geoff Shupard is at Division II
Limestone.
Go Ravens! Go on now, git!
