Cape Region wrestlers off to a strong start
By John McDonald
This year the local wrestling story is start-
ing to change.
Lewes Middle is on the warpath having
won most of its matches with its only loss
coming at the hands of undefeated upstate ri-
val Smyrna Middle.
It looks like the Cape district will have
about 10 to 12 state place winners in the mid-
dle school division this year between Milton
and Lewes. Another part of the equation is
the newly constructed entrance into the CYO
league. Thanks to the generosity of St. Ed-
mond's and St. Jude's parishes, a team was
funded to compete in that statewide league.
They are off to a roaring start.
On Sunday, Jan. 7, the team opened its sea-
son by defeating early season favorite St.
John's 54-48. The local boys recorded eight
pins.
Prior to the start of the match coach Benny
Mitchell told the boys, "We need to pin to
win"
The dual meet was tied at 48 going into the
last match when A. J. Brooks of Lewes
stepped out. In a brief flurry Brooks took
Jack Huff to the mat and wrapped him up for
the win. The following also won by pin:
Chris Keech, Connor Mc Donald, Brandon
Hazel, Matt West, Bobby Hopkins, Rich
Dondarski, Justin Iliian and Brian Riggin.
On Sunday, Jan. 14, the pinning machine
was in full swing scoring II pins in 9 min-
utes and 33 seconds for a 83-18 win over Im-
maculate Conception. The local kids also
won four matches by the point system. The
only losses came due to forfeits at 110, 115
and 120 pounds.
This also was a doubleheader day and the
boys had been hearing all day that host St.
Peter's was going to be a challenge. Mitchell
once again exhorted the troops "pin to win."
The pinning machine geared up again and
Keech, McDonald, Artis and Saylor pinned
their way through the first four matches.
Hazel, West and Bryan Stewart won three
close matches on points - 4-2, 2-1 and 7-4,
respectively. Josh Weldon lost to Jackson
Agorilla 11-7 and Travis Dorman won by
forfeit. St. Edmond's then lost the same 3
weight classes by forfeit to put the score at
41-27.
At this point the bench was starting to qui-
et down a bit. Bobby Hopkins elevated the
mood and the score and cranked the machine
back up with a 27 second pin of Steve Bow-
man.
Dondarski, Illian and Brooks followed
suit. Brian Riggin rounded out the match
with a 12-2 major decision. The final score
St. Edmond's 67, St. Peter's 27 The local
wrestlers scored nine pins in 9 minutes.
If there is a downside to the season so far it
is the forfeits at I10, 115 and 120. If there
are any boys who would like to wrestle these
weight classes for a winning team, stop by
Rehoboth Beach Wrestling Club on Tuesday
or Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
at Rehoboth Elementary School.
