CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, Jan. 19 - Jan. 25, 2001 - 79 Vikin s g boys track team wins Salisbury indoor title RUNNING Tim Bamforth don and Mike Blankenship won the 800-meter relay in 1:45. On the girls side, the Vikings have one of the smallest teams ever with only a dozen athletes on the team. However, the young squad was able to score their most at Salisbury this season with 21 points. The girls placed sixth in the field of 16 teams. The" girls were led by high jumper Rebecca Hollingsworth as she captured the only first place for Cape with a height of 5-0 in her specialty. Hollingsworth seems to be improving her tech- nique weekly and should be look- ing forward to a fine outdoor sea- son ahead. The Cape team will make two upcoming trips to Tower Hill to compete with all the Delaware teams in the state before gathering for the Delaware state champi- onships at the University of Delaware in February. Good luck to the Vikings at Tower Hill and let's hope Coach The Cape Henlopen boys in- door track team, under the leader- ship of veteran coach George Pep- per, moved up a notch in the standings and captured the team title last Friday night, Jan. 12, at the fourth Salisbury Indoor Invita- tional. Meets are held on the 180-meter gym floor oval at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center against all of the Bayside teams, a handful of Maryland and Virginia teams and a few Delaware teams from up- state and downstate to make up a fun evening of competitive track and field. The Viking boys, last year's Di- vision II state outdoor champions, won four events and scored 83 points to top the field of 16 teams. "This was an improved effort from the last few weeks," said Pepper. "The team looked very competitive at the Bayside Con- ference level. Many athletes are looking forward to the Tower Hill competition in another week." The Vikings captured two indi- vidual events on the night, led by distance runner Andrew Freeman in the 3200 meters in 11:06 and high jumper Rob Dorman with a 5-8 clearance. Cape also FREEMAN was able to win two of the three relays as the team of Freeman, Nick Adams, Nick Lemmon and Matt Jackson won the 3200-meter relay in 9:22. The team of Devon Streett, Domenique Kee, Jon Gor- Pepper has a full squad both times to crank out some fast State Meet Qualifying performances. Cape Scoring Results Boys First Place 3200m Relay, 9:22 (Andrew Freeman, 2:14, Nick Adams, 2:22, Nick Lemmon, 2:25, Matt Jack- son, 2:20) 3200 meters - Andrew Freeman 11:06 800m relay - 1:45 (Devon Streett, Domenique Kee, Jon Gor- don, Mike Blankenship) High jump - Rob Dorman 5-8 Second Place 50m hurdles - Domenique Kee 7.7 Shot put - Hao Guan 43-4 Third Place 50m dash - Domenique Kee 6.3 Shot Put - Billy Peden 38-4 -1600m Relay- 4:07 (Mike Blankenship- 61, Daniel Turner- 59, Nick Adams- 62, Rob Dor- man- 65) Fourth Place 300m dash - Mike Blankenship 41.1 Fifth Place 500m dash - Vince Lewis l:21 1600m run - Matt Jackson 5:22 Sixth Place 1600m run - Nick Lemmon 5:33 Paul Hall in the 500 meters, Andy Olenderski in the 3200 me- ters, Shawn Hopkins in the 800 meters and Scott Meyers in the 800 meters also competed for the Vikings. Both runners are supporters of the Seashore Strider Racing Se- ries during the summer months and both athletes toed the starting line in Florida with goals in mind. To finish the 26.2-mile journey is anyone's first and most impor- tant goal as both did with very re- spective performances. Perry, a 33-year-old from Re- hoboth Beach, competed in the 30-34 age group and finished 1,130th overall in a time of 3:48.58 to average 8:51 per mile. Clark, a 23-year-old from Frank- ford, competed in the 18-24 age group and finished 1,691st overall in a time of 4:03.19 to average 9:19 per mile. Perry had a goal of finishing un- der the Boston Marathon 3:45 qualifying mark for her age group and came up just short of the time. Perry had some trouble with de- hydration and had to be taken to the medical tent and put on an IV for about two hours following her finish. "I learned a lot of lessons and eagerly await October so I can have another chance to qualify for Boston," said Perry, a regular at the Grove Club on Tuesday evenings. "It's amazing what our bodies can go through and sur- vive:" Clark ran the marathon as part of the Team in Training Program for Leukemia & Lymphoma, the official race beneficiary for the Disney event. The program, through all of the runners raising money for the dif- ferent events, takes in an amazing $5 million annually. Clark ran the Bottle & Cork 10- Miler last September in 1:16:14 and won the series 20-24 age group in 2:25:37 last summer. Her time of 2:25:37 in the series also placed her third overall in the overall series behind Christine Lacy (2:19:52) and Disney buddy Sharon Perry (2:24:13), which is an interesting stat. Interesting because Series Champ Lacy of Glassboro, N.J. just happened to finish 824th in a time of 3:42:22 in the same Dis- ney Marathon, which put the top three series finishers from last summer all in the same race. Great job girls! Cape's freshman hoop team polishes off Sussex Central 33-31 Cape's Scott Shockley takes aim at two of his game-high 11 points in the victory of Sussex Central last week. By Kenny Riedel Cape's freshman basketball team disposed of Sussex Central Tues- day, upping their record to 5-1 with a 33-31 victory on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The Vikings were paced by excel- lent efforts and lights-out shooting accuracy from Jordan Thomas and Scott Schockley, who drained 11 points each in the 33-31 triumph. Omar Johnson husded nonstop and contributed five hard-earned points. Stephan Shockley tallied four as well, hitting shots with impeccable timing to spur the squad toward the win. Josh Duffield notched a jumper to close Cape's scoring. At the contest's onset, Scott Shockley was practically Cape's loan rebounder, launching himself through the air with the utmost de- sire and limiting Cen{ral to one-shot possessions. His teammates, how- ever, failed to deny the Knights on the glass. Second- and third-chance scores kept Central in the game throughout the first half. Tough team defense and Shock- ley's barrage of pull-up jumpers keyed a two-point edge for Cape at the halftime horn. With Cape ahead 14-12, Thomas did his best impersonation of the "Energizer Bunny," speeding down the floor for tough runners and then knocking down a three-pointer to give Cape a six-point edge. The ag- ile point guard also forced many turnovers to keep the cold-shooting Central offense stagnant. After Central cut into Cape's lead, Shockley dropped a bomb of his own from downtown to extend the lead to 25-20. Johnson and Thomas followed with scores to make it a nine-point game after three periods. The Knights slowly crept back in- to the game and refused to give in. Cape's lead fluctuated between four and six in the final quarter. The Viking advantage that built up in the third quarter, though, was just enough to stave off the pesky Cen- tral squad. Even a 50-foot, buzzer-beating miracle wasn't enough as Cape held on for the win. "They didn't play that well, but Central gave us the win. We just took it. Scott [Shockley] did pretty well. He hit the boards all night," commented freshman coach Poochie Hazzard. The team will next battle Poly- tech in a home game on Friday, Jan. 26.
