Political leaders from-Poland pay visit to Dewey Beach
gate is Rep. Helen Kealey of New
Castle County. Mark Murowany
is co-chair of the Delaware dele-
gation. After making their intro-
ductions, members of the group
were addressed by Mayor Bob
Frederick, who spoke about the
town's infrastructure, government
and specific characteristics that
make it unique.
"This town, during a holiday
weekend, grows from 350 to
30,000 people," he said, noting
Dewey's efforts to curtail its pre-
vious rowdy image in recent
years. "We've worked to make
this a town where everyone can
have a good time. If you're here
to have a good time until one in
the morning you're not going to
disturb someone who's got a fami-
ly and wants to get up and have a
good time at six in the morning."
The delegation of young politi-
cal leaders from Poland visited
the United States from April 4-14,
making Dewey one of its stops
along a four-day Delaware route
that included Wilmington, Leg-
islative Hall in Dover and Rep.

The flag of the Town of Dewey
Beach will fly high in Poland this
year, thanks to a recent visit coor-
dinated by the American Council
of Young Political Leaders (ACY-
PL). Officials from Poland, in-
cluding members of city councils,
consultants to the prime minister
and a member of Parliament paid
a visit to the U.S. Lifesaving Sta-
tion on Dagsworthy Avenue on
Monday, April 10. Arriving via
white stretch limousine, the en-
tourage was accompanied by
ACYPL officials and greeted by
Dewey Beach town officials, in-
cluding the mayor, town manager,
building official and police chief.
The ACYPL was founded 33
years ago and conducts bipartisan
international exchanges that allow
young leaders aged 25-40 to expe-
rience political and cultural dy-
namics of other countries. Each
year, ACYPL conducts more than
25 exchanges, enabling nearly
250 American and international
political leaders to participate.

If approved, the money would

of $1,012,000 has been requested
for Oak Orchard sewer funding
because a county survey deter-

for that money.
To be eligible more than half of

efffprther reduce the cost of
the iOrchard Sewer District.

council approved a resolution to
ask for $1.354 million from the
U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD).
The money is technically

tiative (DRI) funding based upon
the 1998 winter storms that
caused flooding and coastal dam-

George Carey's chicken farm. Af-
ter the Dewey stop, the group was
headed to the Rusty Rudder deck
for cocktails and then to dinner at
Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats to '
sample the local product.
During brief presentations by
town officials, members of the
delegation posed questions, such
as "how do you manage sewage?"
and "Do you have any demands
on architectural style?" Building
official Bill Miller pointed out
similarities between Poland's
coastal nature, being near the
Baltic Sea, and the environmental
challenges that Dewey faces he-
cause of its proximity to the At-
lantic Ocean.
"We have unusual challenges
here, just like you do in Poland,"
said Miller. "My job is to advise
the mayor and commissioners
about environmental hazards that
I foresee. Whether it's hurricanes
in the summer or nor' easters in
the winter, we need to know
what's ahead so we can prepare.
Our biggest challenge is an envi-
ronmental one."
After visiting with the town of-
ficials, members of the delegation
walked outside to get a first-hand
view of the beach and ocean. The
group was presented a flag from
Frederick in honor of their visit
and invited back to visit Dewey's
"way of life."
