CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, April 14 -April 20, 2000 - 37 0000quatics program promotes lifetime of physical fitness Howard Dhondt, 57, weighed 500 pounds when he joined the aquatic program at Methodist Manor House in October 1998. After choosing to have open gas- tric bypass surgery performed by Dr. Roy Smoot, a local bariatric surgeon, Dhondt committed to five days a week of water exer- cise. "Because his knees were weak, the water served as the only medi- um for him to use for exercise," said director of fitness and aquat- ics, Jonathan Souder. "Howard gives 110 percent during his exer- cise routine, which is now six days a week. He really is driven to see body composition improve- ments." Managed by Peninsula United Methodist Homes Inc., of Wilm- ington, Methodist Manor House opened its Wesley Wellness Cen- ter in 1998. At that time they of- fered structured water fitness pro- grams to their residents and to adults from surrounding towns. The water fitness classes range from low-intensity arthritis type classes to high-intensity kickbox- ing aerobic classes. Now the wellness center's serv- ' ices have expanded to include un- structured water fitness times, outpatient rehabilitation - physi- cal, occupational, speech and aquatic - water recreation times for Manor House's skilled nursing center residents, children's swim school, water volleyball games and pool rentals. Pool member- ship now spans four counties. Originally focused on people ages 60 and older, the center now serves clients from 6 months to 94 years. The newest program, Par- ent & Child Fitness, is available to Manor House residents, aquatic program members and the public, and gives families opportunities to exercise and play year-round in 87-degree water. Currently the aquatic program serves five people ages 90 and older, who take the Arthritis Foun- dation aquatic classes and the wa- ter Walk & Talk class and also Paintball tournament set April 15 The ArthrfiS Foundation, Delaware chapter, is sponsoring its annual paintball tournament, beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 15, at Paint- ball Action Games of Delaware, off Route 40.
