Lewes Daily Market's
Alwood has fastest fingers
Brad Alwood of the Daily Market in
Lewes was the winner of the "Fastest
Fingers" promotional contest run by
the Delaware Lottery.
The contest benefits the retailers and
clerks by recognizing the skills and
knowledge of those who sell lottery
products on a daily basis.
Alwood, who placed second in the
county, won the championship by a
clear margin of five seconds.
Conectiv

the river, Conectiv has added
three more lines of defense by en-
trenching a 180-ft.-long by 3-ft.-
wide plywood interceptor box
filled with oil absorbent pads that
soak up any oil that has made it
past the entrenched steel wall.
And, in case any oil makes it past
the two entrenched walls, it will
be contained in the river by a new
system of absorbent and contain-
ment floating booms.
"Absolutely no wildlife has
been identified as having suffered
from the oil that leaked into the
river in January," Spence said.
"And we areconfident we've tak-
en sound steps in these initial
phases of cleanup to stop any
more oil from entering the water."
Spence said the containment
and recovery phases of the overall
cleanup effort may well last three
years before all the oil is drawn
from the contaminated grounds of
the power plant.

"But we're not waiting for this
phase to end before we plan the
next step of cleaning the soil it-
self," Spence said.
"We're developing those plans
now, and,will submit our propos-
als to the proper agencies for their
review and approval," said
Spence.
Conectiv vice president of ener-
gy generation Jim Weller said the
$1.2 million already spent on the
cleanup and whatever future costs
may be incurred will come from
Conectiv's corporate earnings.
"We have no reserve fund for such
occasions," Wetler said. "But
we'll spend whatever it takes to
get this problem fixed properly."
Spence has said the entire
cleanup effort may take as many
years to complete as it took the
leak to contaminate the area.
Both Spence and Weller said
Conectiv has kept NRG Energy
Inc., the future owner of the pow-
er plant, informed of the spill and
the cleanup progress.
Conectiv is expected to go to
settlement later this'year with
NRG Energy Inc., in the $1-bil-
lion sale of Indian River and five
other baseload generation plants.
