68 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, April 14 - April 20, 2000 ARTs & ENTERTAINMENT Steppin' Out Philly's K-floor visits Dogfish Head April 15 By Jen Ellingsworth Taking its name from a classic Howlin' Wolf blues tune, Philadelphia ensemble K-Floor makes a repeat performance at Rehoboth's Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats at 10 p.m., Saturday, April 15. K-Floor has shared stages with Robin Trower of Procul Harem, Otis Rush and Roomful of Blues, among other top-sbelf acts. K- Floor's CD of original music, "Non Filtered,'" was released in April 1999. K-Floor began in 1996 at the Paseo School of Fine Performing Arts in Kansas City, with founding members Nick Schnebelen, guitar and vocals, Chris Schutz, bassist, and the band's original drummer. After a year playing as a trio on the local circuit, K-Floor moved to Philadelphia in 1997 and wel- comed Justin DiFebbo as pianist/B3 organist and Zil as drummer/percussionist. Playing authentic-style blues with its own original twist, K- Floor plays its own Philadelphia area and beyond, performing at clubs, festivals and other events. Named Best Band in Philadelphia in 1999, K-Floor has roots firmly planted in the blues while pulling elements from rock and swing. The band has been featured on Fox Television's Good Day Philadelphia, radio station Y- 100's Feztival and Philadelphia's Jam on the River, among other engage- ments. The rain date is April 22. This popular annual event regionally attracts kite fliers and spectators and is one of the events featured as part of National Kite Month, which lasts from March 25 through the end of April. Established 32 years ago when the Maharajah of Bharatpur, Indila challenged Delaware's governo)r to a kite flying contest, the com,- petition proved to be crowd pleas;- er. Year after year the champii- onship continued and in time, people began coming with their own kites. The festival draws thousands of people to Cape Henlopen to watch competitors vie for ! 8 judged prizes. They ais,o are treated to stunt kite flying b?y professionals. The longterm success of tMe Great Delaware Kite Festival wats acknowledged by Delaware gov- ernor Tom Carper in 1998, when the event captured the Governor's Hall of Fame Tourism Award for Outstanding Special Event: One Day. Business and community lead- ers have donated awards for novice and advanced competitors of all ages. Six special class awards will be designated for superlatives, such as the smallest competitor and most senior com- petitor. The competitor's entrance fee is $1 for fliers up to 17 years old and $2 for all others. Competitors can also pay an additional $2 to com- pete in the Highest Kite Award category which will take place at 12:15 p.m., for all ages. Thereis no charge to watch the competi- tion. There is, however, a $2 per car special event fee to enter the state park, which is collected at the entrance to the park.
