72 - CAPE GAZEIWE, Friday, April 14 - April 20, 2000
Coastal Concerts offer IBIS in Lewes on April 29
Coastal Concerts in Lewes will
host IBIS, a Washington, D.C.-
based ensemble for an 8 p.m., Sat-
urday, April 29 performance at
Lewes Presbyterian Church.
IBIS, a mixed ensemble com-
posed of harp, flute and string
trio, employs unusual instrumen-
tation that permits it to perform a
wide variety of music.
IBIS has been praised by the
press as 'an eclectic mix of music,
well played and fetchingly pre-
sen ted.'
The April 29 concert will open
with the evocative sounds of the
solo flute in Debussy's haunting
"Sphinx," followed by the strains
of familiar Debussy favorites
transcribed for flute and harp. A
viola is added for the quirky Petit
Suite, a trio by 20th-century
French composer Jolivet. Next,
• the string trio will take its turn in
Beethoven's dramatic C-minor
string trio, Opus 9, no. 3. A Ha-
dyn Flute Quartet and the unusual
Quintette by Francaix for the en-
tire ensemble round out the
evening's program.
Members of IBIS include
David Finch, cello, who is the as-
sistant principal cellist for the
Boston Pops Esplanade Orches-
tra, and a veteran of many of
Boston's finest performing en-
sembles; Katherine Murdock, vi-
ola, who is a former member of
the Mendelssohn Quartet and fre-
quent guest of the Orpheus
Chamber Orchestra and Music
from Marlboro, Vt.; Susan Robin-
son, harp, serves as principal
harpist of the Kennedy Center
Opera House Orchestra and is a
frequent guest of the Boston Pops
Esplanade Orchestra, former con-
certmaster of the Florida Orches-
tra and longstanding performer
with the Boston Symphony; and
Adria Sternstein, flute, who is
principal flutist with the Kennedy
Center Opera House Orchestra
and frequent guest with the New
York Philharmonic.
As individuals, these musicians
have performed in some of the
world's most renowned orchestras
and summer and chamber music
festivals.
An evening with IBIS, which
the Washington Post praised as
"compelling," promises an
evening that is informal, informa-
tive and fun.
Tickets are $15 per person and
may be purchased at the Stepping
Stone, Sugar and Spice and the
Chamber of Commerce in Lewes;
at Browseabout Books in Re-
hoboth Beach; and the Station
Gallery in Bethany Beach. For
ticket information, call 645-1539.
A reception will follow the con-
cert so members of the audience
can meet the artists.
Two members of the IBIS chamber music group, Susan
Robinson, harpist, and Joseph Scheer, violinist, will join the
other members of their ensemble April 29 at the Lewes Pres-
byterian Church in a performance sponsored by Coastal Con-
eerts.
