Viking boys place 2nd
in Burgess Invitational
By Tim Barn forth
The Cape Henlopen boys track
and field team, coached by Pat
Pollock in his second year, trav-
eled to the annual Keith Burgess
Invitational last Saturday, April 8,
for its first real test of the season.
The Vikings responded to the
challenge by placing third in the
field of 19 teams, scoring 54
points on the day. Henlopen rival
Caesar Rodney won the boys
competition with 82 points, while
Glasgow finished second with 56
points.
The Vikings always seem to do
well at the Burgess Invitational
with several top-three team per-
formances over the past 20 years.
Cape won team titles in 1983, '84,
'85, and '93, if I'm not mistaken.
"I'm happy with the perform-
ances considering the wind condi-
tions," commented Pollock, "We
are taking one meet at a time and
not looking to the state meet yet.
We still have some tough teams
and real good athletes to face, and
we just need to continue to prac-
tice hard and compete hard."
Saturday's largest obstacle was
the wind, as performances were a
bit off the normal, but places were
more important on that day. The
boys were without an individual
champion, however, they were
able to grab three-second place
finishes.
The much anticipated 2-mile re-
lay of Chris Jackson (2:07), Matt
Jackson (2:08), Rob Walsh (2:12)
and Brian Kniepp (2:10) turned in
a time of 8:40. Dewayne Hollo-
man took second in the triple
jump with a leap of 40-8, and
Donnell Eaddy was second in the
long jump with a distance of 20-4.
The Vikings were third in the
800-meter relay in 1:34.6 with the
team of Kyle Mansfield, Hollo-
man, Justin Jones and Eaddy,
while Mansfield was also fourth
in the 200 meters in 24.1. The
400-meter relay of Mansfield,
Holloman, Dominique Key and
Eaddy finished up in 44.7. Hao
Guan put together two season-
best performances as he threw the
shot put 43-4 and the discus 129-
7. Youngsters James Eley was
fifth in the high jump at 5-8, while
Antonio Alford also finished sixth
at 5-8.
The Vikings haveput them-
selves in position as the top Divi-
sion II team in the state and have
moved up to eighth in the top 10
rankings for the state. A track and
field banner has not flown into the
Little Big House since back-to-
back titles in 1992 and '93, and
this year's Vikings have a legiti-
mate shot at bringing it home in
the smaller Division II race.
In Keith Burgess girls action,
the Vikings of coach George Pep-
per scored 21 points to finish
ninth among 16 teams in the field.
The top individual of the day
was Dalneisha Shockley as she
finished second with a leap of 16-
5 for her season-best long jump
attempt. The Cape gifts were also
third in the 400-meter relay and
fourth in the 1,600-meter relay.
Terez Partlow wrapped up the
scoring with a fifth in the 100 me-
ters in a time of 13.0.
DUAL MEET ACTION - Two
more wins by the Vikings boys'
and girls' track teams raises their
record to an impressive 5-0 head-
ing into the second half of the sea-
son and a clash with the Riders of
Caesar Rodney and the Senators
of Dover on Tuesday, April 18.
This past Tuesday, April 11, the
Cape Henlopen girls beat Poly-
tech 115-26 and Milford 89-54 at
the fast, red track of Polyteeh
High School, while the boys beat
Milford 85-61 and also easily
outscored Polytech. It was again
the sprinting and jumping talents
of Dalneisha Shockley that car-
ried the Viking girls to victory,
while Terez Partlow, Charli Tabler

place finish in the 1,600-me-

and Arshar Smith each won two
events.
The Bucs were leading the
Vikings going into the second to
last event, but Cape was able to
close out the meet by winning the
200 meters, mile relay and long
jump.
On the boys side of the action, it
was Chris Jackson winning the
1600 meters and 3200 meters
with Donnell Eaddy winning the
long jump. Cape won the 3200-
meter relay, as well as both short
sprint relays. Trip DelCampo
won the shot put, Holloman won
the triple jump and Guan won the
discus throw.
UNIQUE EVENT - Cape Co-
ed Relays will begin at noon, Sat-
urday, April 15, with 10 teams
taking part in the unique event.
The boys and girls run on the re-
lays together and alternate the or-
der of each relay. Come out and
support the Vikings at the Coed
Relays.

DIAMOND FOOTBALL
LEAGUE! - The Eastern Sussex
Grizzlies will host the Kent Coun-
ty Falcons at 1 p.m., Saturday,
April 15, on the gridiron at Re-
hoboth Elementary School. Kick-
off is 1 p.m. Admission is free, but
donations will be appreciated,
The Grizzlies are a minor league
football team featuring former all-
staters from Cape Henlopen, Sus-
sex Central, Indian River and Mil-
ford.
HENRY WHITE TO HALL
OF FAME - Cape Henlopen
(1974) and Colgate graduate Hen-
ry White will be inducted into the
Delaware Sports Hall of Fame on
May 11. Henry finished second in
the nation in all purpose yardage
his senior year at Colgate to Earl
Campbell of the former Houston
Oilers. Henry was also MVP of
the Blue-Gray game and was an
All-East selection by the "New
York Times." White was a foot-
ball and track standout while at
Cape Henlopen. White's football
coach at Cape, Bill Mulheisen,
was fond of saying, "I have a line
coach, a backfield coach, a kick-
ing coach and a defensive coach.
As for me? I coach Henry White."
White's induction is certainly on
his own merits, but also the result
of the tireless efforts of his high
school track coach Tom Hickman.
TENNIS CHAMP JESSE
ROBINSON - The 13-year-old
Jesse won the 16 and under cham-
pionship last weekend in Lancast-
er, Pa. at the Hempfield Sports
Complex. The draw was made up
of 32 top players from the Middle
States Section of the U.S. Tennis
Association. Jesse is now the No.
1 ranked player in the 16 and un-
der Middle States Section. She is
heading to the Gator Bowl tourna-
ment at end of this month. She
just turned 13 six weeks ago.
VARSITY SOFTBALL BATS
IN A SLUMP - Last Friday, April
open season Saturday
7, fresh off a 1-0 victory over Sus-
sex Central, the Cape softball
team traveled to CR for a show-
down of two undefeated teams.
The game featured lefty Maggie
Lingo vs. the Rider's fight hander
Janice Savage. Savage kept the
Cape hitters off balance all after-
noon, recording 11 strikeouts in a
3-0 CR victory.
"We are now in control of the
Northern Division, and it would
be great to win the conference
two years in a row," Savage said.
Last Tuesday, April 11, the
Vikings were upset by Lake For-
est, 2-1, in an extra inning game
that went nine full innings.
Maren Ford stroked a two-out
triple in the bottom of the ninth,
but she was stranded at third. The
Vikings are now 5-2 on the sea-
son.
CAPE JV SOFTBALL -
Cape's junior varsity softball team
chalked one up in the win and loss
column last week. On April 4,
trailing Sussex Central 2-1 in the
fifth inning, Elisabeth Lingo sin-
gled, stole second and scored on a
Jen Mickel base hit. Mickel then
scored the go-ahead run on a tow-
ering triple by Brandy Rehkemp.
Christy Smith collected two hits
in the game, and pitcher Blair
Rogers got the win on the mound.
On Friday, April 7, Caesar Rod-
ney visited Lewes and left with a
8-4 victory. The Riders rallied for
four runs in the third inning to
seal the win.
SOFTBALL ATHLETE OF
THE WEEK - Jen Mickel is a
smooth-fielding infielder who is
one of the reasons why the Viking
JV softball team is off to a 4-1
start. Mickel makes tough defen-
sive plays look easy and she's on a
tear at the plate, batting .430 with
12 RBI.
JUNIOR VARSITY LAX-
MEN - On Tuesday, April 11, the
Cape junior varsity lacrosse team
took on a tough CR squad at the
