Conectiv encourages safety above all
The first buds of new growth on trees, and
lawns are beginning to lose that winter pallor.
Spring is here! As you tune up your lawn
mower, sharpen those hedge trimmers and pre-
pare for outside projects, remember to put
safety at the top of your list. Conectiv Power
Delivery reminds everyone to think about
safety first for outdoor projects for your home
or business. Take a few moments to review
these tips to help keep you, your family and
your employees free from injury while spruc-
ing up:
• Working overhead: Never allow yourself
or your tools or equipment to come into con-
tact with overhead power lines. Keep items
such as ladders, pool cleaning equipment,
scaffolding, tree trimming equipment, and
wooden tool extensions clear of overhead
lines. Objects such as these can conduct elec-
tricity, causing you or someone else serious in-
jury. Carry these and other high-reaching
pieces of equipment parallel to the ground. Be
alert! Look up before you raise anything into
the air to make sure you avoid contacting over-
head power lines. If you will be working in
proximity to overhead power lines in
Delaware, you must call the owner of the pow-
er lines, similar to calling Miss Utility before
you dig. Many times the owner will be Conec-
tiv Power Delivery. You can reach us at 800-
375-7117. They will help you determine how
to safety perform the work you have planned.
• Digging safely: For outdoor projects that
require digging, make sure you call Miss Util-
ity, at least two but not more than 10 full busi-
ness days before you dig. If you scrape or
puncture gas or electric lines with digging
tools you could be seriously injured. Miss
utility is a free service that identifies the ap-
proximate location of underground utilities.
When you call Miss Utility, a utility represen-
tative will come to your residence, business or
worksite and place marker indicating the loca-
tion of underground utilities. Excavate pru-
dently and carefully and take all reasonable
steps necessary to properly protect, support
and backfill underground utility lines. Do not
dig within two feet of the markers. Calling
Miss Utility can save you time, trouble and
money. The Miss Utility phone number is 800-
441-8355.
• Landscaping tips: It's a good idea to avoid
planting trees directly beneath power lines,
too. Don't forget to leave enough room for the
tree to grow, without growing into the power
lines. That little sapling can turn into a 10-foot,
15-foot or even 50-foot tree over time. All
landscaping should be at least l0 feet away
from the green transformer box on your lawn,
and also from utility equipment or meter.
• Use the proper equipment: Make sure you
have the proper safety equipment four the job
including safety glasses and gloves. Never use
an electric tool or appliance in the rain, on wet
surfaces, or while standing in damp grass. For
example, keep the electric hedge trimmer in
the garage until the ground is dry and any dew
has evaporated. Check your extension cords.
Discard them if they are cut, frayed or missing
the grounding prong. While you're working
outside, use outlets equipped with Ground
Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs). GFCIs can
prevent serious electric shock if a tool mal-
functions.
For emergency service, to report a power
outage, or to report downed power lines, call
Conectiv Power Delivery's emergency number
at 800-375-7117.
Innovative program provides financial secrets
All across the country, home-
owners over the age of 61 are en-
joying financial security through
participation in the FHA-Insured
reverse mortgage program. The
program allows homeowners to
draw tax-free income from their
home equity without requiring
monthly repa,ment. No longer do
older homeowners need to com-
promise their standard of living to
keep up with rising expenses.
For many Americans, the gold-
en years are not very golden.
Health-care costs, home mainte-
nance expenses and property tax-
es keep going up. For someone
on a fixed income, it's often a
challenge to keep pace. Now,
thanks to the advocacy of the
American Association of Retired
Persons (AARP), and with the
backing of the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development
(HUD), the reverse mortgage pro-
gram provides a way to supple-
ment their income.
A reverse mortgage is a safe fi-
nancial alternative enabling older
homeowners to remain in their
homes for years and to enjoy a se-
cure retirement. Reverse mort-
gages enable older homeowners
to access the built-up home equity
in their home with repayment of
the loan deferred until they no
longer live in the home. Proceeds
from the program are tax free and
can be received monthly, in cash
or a credit line can be established.
Historically, income qualifica-
tions have prevented many older
adults from qualifying for tradi-
tional loans. Until recently, many
of these homeowners were forced
to sell their homes and move in
order to cover their expenses.
While there is no restriction on
the use of the money, quite often
the cash is used to pay off a cur-
rent mortgage, to pay off some
credit cards, to pay property taxes
and insurance, and, of course,
travel. Seniors often worry that
the expenses of homeownership
will force them to lower their
standard of living.
This is a choice older home-
owners should not have to make.
With the reverse mortgage pro-
gram, participants now have ac-
cess to additional cash resources
without having to use their fixed
monthly income.
