CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, April 21 - April 27, 2000 - 83 Edward Carter Gallery to unveil two new photo exhibits The Edward Carter Gallery in Lewes has announced the opening of two new photography ex-hibi- tions: Lyle Gomes: Hand Made Landscapes, and Edward Carter: Images of Lewes. The public is in- vited to attend the opening recep- tion, set for 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 22. Not every photographer's vi- sion is contained within a rectan- gular frame. Lyle Comes sees the world in panorama. To outward appearances, he approaches pho: tography like many: using a 4 x 5- inch camera with tripod, making his own prints and limiting his editions. But like his format choice, Gomes makes his own rules. First, he masks his 4 x 5- inch sheet film holder so that he views the upside down and back- wards image immediately cropped. The result is a panoramic negative without the distortion typical of wide-angle cameras. His choice of subject matter is just as individual. Though clearly working within the landscape tra- dition, Gomes shuns the virgin lands immortalized by Ansel Classes Continued from page 82 to 4 p.m., May 28. He chooses the shy light of overcast skies, purposefully turninghis viewfind- er downwards, concentrating on the earth, not the heavens. Gomes' newest work is the pri- mary consideration of this exhibi- tion. A recent wintry week in New York City inspired a lovely group of images from snow covered Central Park. Gomes has also just completed a year in England as a Fullbright Fellow. His carefully formed work interprets the forms of ancient estates and farms, punc- tuated by shr/bs pruned with pa- tient precision. Describing his newest body of work, Gomes writes, "I am intel- lectually and visually attracted to what I describe as hand-made landscapes that I see as a thought- ful relationship between ourselves and our environment. As a pho- tographer, it is my intention to vi- sually capture a relationship with our environment that demon- strates a reverence for nature."
