38 - CAPE GAZETI, Friday, June 2 - June 8, 1995 Arts & Entertainment Steppm Out Big Idea recording live at Cork for new CD By Denise M. Marshall Having recently signed a record deal with Cork Records, Big Idea will be recording songs live for its new compact disc tonight at the Bottle & Cork in Dewey Beach. Based in Virginia Beach, Big Idea plays alternative rock music. The band performs modern rock cover songs by groups such as the Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and R.E.M. In addition, Big Idea plays obscure, older music by artists such as David Bowie. "We pull them out and do them our own way," explained Chris Leveille, lead vocalist for Big Idea. Big Idea also plays original material. "It's very appealing to all ages," Leveille said. "It's not too hard, and it's not too easy." Leveille, along with drummer Gregg Brooks and guitarist Marc Pagan, formed Big Idea two years ago while in high school at New- port News, Va. Raye Smith, the group's bass player, later joined the band. While the original band mem- bers are influenced by classic rock bands, Smith is influenced by R&B and funk music from the 60s and early 70s. Big Idea has toured in Mary- land, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Tennessee, Alabama, North Car- olina, South Carolina, Virginia and Delaware. Locally, the group has performed at Smithers, the University of Delaware, the Stone Balloon and the Bottle & Cork. The group has already started recording songs for the CD under the Cork Records label. About 90 percent of the songs will be origi- nals, Leveille said. Big Idea plans to record five tracks live at the Cork tonight (Friday, June 2). In addition to Big Idea, Cork Records has signed the Dan Kibler Band to its record label. The two bands join the ranks of Cork Records' alumni Tisra Til and the Underground Cartoons.
