Disney artist to demonstrate Jun, e 17 at Animation 00u-t
With the stroke of a brush, Dis-
ney ink and paint artists have giv-
en life to a myriad of animated
characters from Snow White to
Peter Pan to Ariel.
On Saturday, June 17, from I to
4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., the tradi-
tional animation process will be
showcased at the Animation Art
Gallery in itfs new location at The
First Street Station in Rehoboth
as part of the new Walt Disney
Animation Art Ink & Paint Tour.
Artist Arthur Zaslawski, from the
Walt Disney Studios of Burbank,
Calif., Will demonstrate the
unique talent of creating beautiful
imagery on acetate cels, a process
utilized for decades in the creation
of classic Disney animated films.
"It is a thrill and an honor to
host the Walt Disney Animation
Art Ink & Paint Tour," said Jim
Polhemus, owner of Animation
Art Gallery. "We all have fond
memories of Disney animated
films, and now our guests can see
first-hand how this beautiful art-
work is created." As part of the
special event, Walt Disney Ani-
mation Art has created an exclu-
sive hand-painted cel, "Leader of
the Band," which can be signed
by the artist at the event.
The image spotlights Mickey
Mouse in the opening sequence
from the popular Mickey Mouse
Club show, which celebrates its
45th anniversary this year.
"Leader of the Band" is a num-
bered limited edition of 250 and
has an unframed suggested retail
price of $750. As a special finish-
ing touch, each piece in this edi-
tion will also be signed by Disney
Legend Bill Justice who original-
ly animated Mickey Mouse in the
opening sequence in 1955.
The Walt Disney Studio's
famed Ink and Paint Department
has changed very little since its
creation nearly 70 years ago.
The department was responsi-
ble for hand-inking and hand-
painting virtually every Disney
animated short and feature-length
film from the late 1920s through
the production of Disney's "The
Little Mermaid" (1989).
Today, due to revolutionary ad-
vancements in computer technol-
ogy, the laborious inking and
painting process is no longer re-
quired. However, the artistry
lives on through the efforts of
Walt Disney Art Classics, publish-
ers of Walt Disney Animation Art.
The portfolio of Walt Disney
Animation Art includes original
animation artwork, limited-edi-
tion animation artwork and fine
art sericels.
This portfolio is considered by
many to be the crown jewel of the
animation art form - a treasury un-
equaled anywhere in the world.
Each and every limited edition of
Walt Disney Animation Art is
conceived, drawn, inked and
painted at the original Walt Dis-
ney Studios in California, where
virtually all of Disney's classic
animated films have been pro-
duced.
Using the original animator's
drawings, and in most cases, the
original paint chips as well, artists
in the Ink and Paint Department
continue the traditional Disney
animation process in the creation
of limited edition Walt Disney
Animation Art. While maintain-
ing the essence of the original an-
imatorfs pencil drawing; the inker
infuses each image with color,
mood and personality.
Using an impressive palette of
more than 3,500 colors from Dis-
ney's custom-mixed paint library,
the painter "floats" one color at a
time to the back of each cel until
the image is complete.
