LACROSSE HONORS - Joey
Cahill and Corey Mahoney were
among five Delaware players to
be named to the Coaches All-
American Team. Cahill is a junior
while Mahoney is on his way to
Virginia Wesleyan where he will
become the sixth Cape player on
the squad. Cahiil was announced
as the team's Offensive Player of
the Year at last Thursday's awards
banquet. Mahoney was chosew
Most Valuable Player. Other
lacrosse awards include: Leader-
ship, Mark Moore; Most Im-
proved Offensive Player, Joey
Vavala; Most Improved Defensive
Player, Chris Keller; Defensive
Player of the Year, Matt Lambros;
Unsung Hero, Steve Welsh; Un-
sung Hero, Steve Conlon; and the
Spirit Award went to Eddie
Savarese. Mahoney, Cahill and
Mark Moore were selected to first
team All-State, while Welsh and
Brandon Bank were chosen to the
second team. In other lacrosse
news, Spencer Steele of Fairfield
will play in the North/South Divi-
sion I All-Star game Friday night
(June 9) at the University of
Delaware.
ATHLETES OF THE YEAR!
- Seniors Julie Parseghian and
Mark Moore were chosen by
coaches as the Outstanding Senior
Athletes for the class of 2000.
Moore also received the presti-
gious Kevin Kennedy Award.
Julie excelled in volleyball, bas-
ketball and softball, while Moore
was a standout in football and
lacrosse. The Bill Degnan Faith
in Human Spirit Awards went to
Arshar Smith and Brian Kneipp.
Tommy Sheehan was the winner
of the Henry Brisco Award, while
Barry Barlow received the Mike
Snell Friendship Award. John
Collins and Brandon Street re-
ceived Robert A. Young scholar-
ships. Nick Shaffer recived the
Brian Nowakowski best all
around chorus member, and defi-
nitely best worn suit of the night.
Jodi Moore received the Lewes
Fire Department scholarship and a
$1,000 Roadhouse scholarship.
Tavon Biles received a $5,000
grant from Greenwood Trust.
WHOOPS! - Last week we
may have overlooked some de-
serving athletes for Ali-Henlopen
Conference recognition. Selected
to the second team All-Confer-
ence for soccer were Jodi Moore,
D'Anna Fluharty, Lauren Folke,
Sarah Arensberg and Amber
Smith. Blame the oversight on
Sam's Club reading glasses!
KANGA CUP! - Cape sopho-
mores Lateef Turral and Ross
Karsnitz will take off for New
Zealand and later Australia play-
ing for a United States under-16
soccer team that will compete in
the international Kanga Cup tour-
nament. The event is sponsored
by the People to People Sports
Ambassadors program. Each

team is guaranteed three to four
games to play into the champi-
onship round. The boys will re-
turn on July 14.
FOREVER YOUNG - Katie
Young graduated from Cape in
1996 and recently graduated from
the University of Delaware with
dual certification in special educa-
tion and something else. Katie
was a two-time All American
while at Cape and cheered at the
Pro Bowl in Hawaii. She has
been hired by Cape to coach the
football cheerleaders in the fail.
"Now I need to find a real job,"
Katie said. "A teaching job!"
SOFTBALL ALL-STARS! -
The Blue-Gold high school soft-
ball All-Star game will be played
at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 14,
at the Georgetown Little League
complex. The All-State team will
be honored before the game.
