The national tournament, Slam
Dunk to the Beach, will be held
Tuesday, De.c. 26 through Satur-
day, Dec. 30, at Cape Henlopen
High School in Lewes. Games
will begin at 8 a.m. each day and
continue to the last game, which
begins at 9:15 p.m. The tourna-
ment, organized by Bobby Jacobs,
will feature a field of 35 teams
playing 40 games over the five-
day period. Teams representing
fifteen states and the District of
Columbia will participate.
The following teams will take
part in the annual tournament:

the 20-24 age group. Sallie, look-
ing grown up (which means I'm
getting old), is
the indoor
state record
holder in the
3,200 meters.
Sallie's two
biggest sup-
porters, morn
Becky and dad
Terry, were out
front in their JOHNSON
trademark race spot cheering her
on as she cruised by her house at
the one-mile point. Sallie, induct-
ed into the Strider Cross Country
Hall of Fame in 1999, has already
tackled the marathon and has her
sights set on another as she con-
tinues to put in the miles. Con-
grats, Sallie, and how does your
morn jump up and down and nev-
er spill her coffee?

will feature a picnic breakfast

the nearby Cathedral. The two
medieval sites are well worth the
short walk from the center of
town.
Two famous British Open win-
ners, Tom Morris, Sr. and his son,
Tom, Jr., are buried in the Cathe-
dral Cemetery. Golfers left tees
and other golf equipment at these
graves, along with the more tradi-
tional flowers.
We also visited portions of St.
Andrews University, founded in
1410. The college buildings are
mixed among the shops and
homes, forming an integral part of
the town.
Alter a bite to eat at a local pub,
we headed back to Edinburgh
along the Tourist Route. The
countryside was magnificent, and
the views of the Firth of Forth
were equally stunning.
Next time, I'm going to play the
Old Course. For once, I will not
care what I score.

FIRST HOLE-IN-ONE AT
THE ROOKERY - Tom Valione
of Springfield, Pa. recorded the
first-ever hole-in-one at The
Rookery, the newest Cape Region
public golf course which opened
July 30. The historic event hap-
pened on Aug. 8 when Vallone
aced the par 3 9th hole. This in-
timidating hole measures only
123 yards and is the shortest of
The Rookery's five par 3s. The
9th hole requires a forced carry of
100 yards over a pond to a green
that is narrow in depth. Just hit-
ting the green requires a good
shot. This was Vallone's first visit
to The Rookery and he plans to
come back on his next trip to the
beach. A sales representative for
the Delaware area, he gets to play
locally three or four times a year.
Vallone's home club is Springfield
Country Club where he averages
in the mid 90s.
He has been playing golf for
seven years and this was his first
hole-in-one. The 7-iron he select-
ed proved to be the perfect club as
the ball hit short of the pin and
rolled in.
