Deborah Hoffman to compete for Miss USA crown
By Michael Short
Deborah Hoffman has won the
title of Miss Delaware USA and
will compete for the Miss USA
crown on March 1.
Hoffman previously won the
Miss Cape Henlopen crown, mak-
ing her a familiar face to local
lageant watchers. Now, she's
moved on to the Miss USA pag-
eant, winning the state title that
has always been a dream of hers.-
Hoffman is a magna cum laude
graduate of the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore with a
major in fashion merchandising.
She won the title during a two-day
competition at the University of
Delaware, besting the other com-
petition in pageants that awarded
$57,000 in tuition scholarships.
"You need to have goals and
dreams," Hoffman said of the
pageant experience.
The Miss Delaware USA pag-
eant is a preliminary of the Miss
USA pageant, which is a prelimi-
nary of the Miss Universe pag-
eant.
There is also a Miss Teen
Delaware pageant associated with
the Miss Delaware USA pageant.
Competition is based upon in-
terview, evening gown and swim-
suit, with each element weighted
equally.
Although contestants are not
knowfi for supporting a specific
cause, the pageant always works
with the causes of ovarian and
breast cancer, making that a
strong emphasis of the Miss Uni-
verse pageant.
Hoffman works with fifth, sixth
and seventh graders teaching
them about drug prevention. She
speaks of a letter from a child say-
ing she helped him to avoid drugs,
a letter that she obviously cherish-
es. Winning the pageant can help
her further that cause, she said.
"We can do a lot with that crown,"
she said.
Hoffman said that pageants can
help young women with confi-
dence and poise. While not al-
ways politically popular, she said
the self-esteem and the purpose
the pageants can provide are valu-
able tools that will help contest-
ants for decades to come. "It has
been very beneficial in my career
aspirations," she said.
Hoffman enjoys the Cape area
beaches, works out with Paul
Timmons at The Firm Fitness
Center and now lives in Ocean
View. -
She is considering a return to
college for an advanced degree,
but for now, she is just savoring
winning her title.
"Winning a state title is my
dream. I still feel as though I am
on Cloud Nine," she said. "I feel
very successful. I've worked hard
and it has paid off."
Hoffman said that she feels she
can be a good Miss USA because
she feels she's down to earth, well
rounded and easy to talk with. She
said her family has been very sup-
portive of her efforts.
The Miss USA pageant will
take place March 1 in Gary, Indi-
ana and it will be nationally tele-
vised.

said Maj. Gen. Frank Vavala, ad-
jutant general of the Delaware Na-
tional Guard.
"But with all that's going in our
