82 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Nov. 16 - Nov. 22, 2001 Children's Beach House Christmas Art Show and Sale set Nov. 30-Dec. 1 At least 76 local and regional artists will exhibit works during the 12th annual Children's Beach House benefit Christmas art show Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Proceeds will benefit the school year environ- mental education program which serves special-needs children and their peers from around the state. The show opens from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, with a gala preview reception in the one-year- old building at 1800 Bay Ave. on Lewes Beach. The donation is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets are available at Trader's Jewelry and the Lewes Chamber of Commerce or by calling the Children'sBeach House at 645- 9184. Judging the show will be Jewell Gross Brenneman of Elkridge, Md. Brenneman holds master's degrees in ceramics from George Washington University and James Madison University. She teaches drawing and ceramics and main- tains personal working clay and painting studios in Elkridge. Her work is represented in galleries in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Alaska, and she serves as artist educator at the Baltimore Clayworks and the Meyersberg Senior Center. Much of her post- graduate work was in advanced painting at James Madison Uni- versity. Brenneman is scheduled to teach at the Rehoboth Art League in 2002. The five artists whom she selectsfor blue ribbons will receive monetary awards. Five honorable mentions will also be selected. Exhibiting for the first time this year will be Sandra Leigh Rob- bins, an owner-partner in the Panache Gallery in Rehoboth Beach. She works with found ma- terials to create her assemblages, L which she says have evolved from early collage creation. Calling herself a "scavenger since child- hood," she uses beach glass, beads, wood scraps, fabrics and other items in her work. Two as- semblages she will enter in the show have an Oriental flavor, and all entries will be framed in black wood shadow box frames.-Rob- bins also creates greeting cards using archival and handmade pa- per made from cotton and abaca pulp. Working in her home studio in Smyrna, artist Lillian Rippa uses watercolor and ink for her Orien- tal free-brush style works (Sumie) on handmade paper. She plans to exhibit one painting of a hen and chicks with bamboo, another with a lotus and frog and one of Koi fish and lotus. Rippa has worked in the Oriental style for more than 20 years, switching from Western watercolors in the late 1970s. She has volunteered at the Children's Beach House. Kathi Buschi of Magnolia, ex- hibiting for the first time in the Children's Beach House show, specializes in folk art and acrylic. She will offer limited edition prints of the Lewes Zwaanendael Museum and the Zwaanendael Inn, plus an original, "Blue House on Angler's Road," historically the William West house. A trade- mark she adds to most paintings is a small red-headed girl and two dogs - her daughter, now grown, and the pets she grew up with. The opening reception evening will once again include the popu- lar silent auction, offering gift items donated by local merchants. A special addition to this year's auction will be a signed copy of photographer Kevin Fleming's recent book, "Delaware." Flem- ing will also be exhibiting photo- graphs in the show.
