Passive kings roll over as Eagles win 48-17
Eagles running back Duce Staley found plenty of holes Nov.
11 in the Viking defense.
By Dave Frederick
The Eagles looked good against
a very bad football team on Nov.
11, doing the Bristol Stomp a']]
over the hapless and fading Min-
nesota Vikings 48-17.
-And with the score 31-3 with
two minute s remaining in the first
half, a prominent Philadelphia
sportswriter and TV personality
leaned back in his chair and
sighed, "Here comes that Super
B0wl bullcrap again !"
And why not? Just ask the Seat-
tle Seahawks, who brought the
Raiders back to reality. The Rams
are pretty in a flag football sort of
way, but are particularly vulnera-
ble to the "blitz package" as run
by Philly. And remember that last
season the Vikings were in the
NFC championship game and the
Ravens, who had gone five
straight games without scoring a
touchdown in the regular season,
won the Super Bowl. So here
comes the bullcrap and why not?
Duce Staley, back from a shoul-
der injury, ran with happy feet,
stepping out of tackles like a evil
child from wet concrete.
Staley rushed for-146 yards and
a touchdown, but the hot dog ven-

HIGH SCHOOL - Undefeated Dover
plays the state's best 5-4 team'in cross-town
rival Caesar Rodney Friday, Nov. 16, in
what is the Delaware's most emotional ri-
valry since Cape versus Sussex Central.
Look for the Riders to take Dover to the
limit in this ball game, which is as close as
Caesar Rodney will get to this year's state
tournament.
Cape closes out the season by hosting St.
Mark's on Friday night. Some really good
Viking teams over the last eighl years have
had no luck with the Spartans, which is
why I'm picking the Vikings in the upset.
St. Mark's is coming off an upset victory
over Salesianum and will not take Cape se-
riously after the Vikings were whacked by
Milford 24-0.
Sussex Tech 6-3 can close out a great and
satisfying season with a victory over Poly-
tech in the season-ending Tech Bowl. A
loss by the Ravens to the Panthers is just
unthinkable for coach Bill Collick and his
program.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL - Miami is
now under pressure to blast the remaining
opponents on their schedule or miss having
an opportunity to play for the national
championship in the flowery Rose Bowl.
The national title game should be played in
the Meadowlands with free tickets going to
the policemen and firefighters of New York
City.
Tubby got win number 300 and that's
great, so let it go! Some social commenta-
tors felt the same about the Ripkin streak.
Get up and go to work! That's what you're
supposed to do.
Maryland is at North Carolina State on
Saturday with a chance to win the ACC out-
right at 10-1 and be in one of the major
bowls.
But Maryland has gotten little respect
from the,national pollsters.
Scott Dapps (former lieutenant on the
Rehoboth Beach Patrol) and his Moravian
squad beat Muhlenberg 17-7. Muhlenberg
is the alma mater of Dick "Decoy" Keck of
Lewes, who has me on the 20 waiting list.
Viilanova put 54 points on the board
against a Hofstra team that just riddled
Delaware earlier in the season. Delaware is
at Villanova Saturday to close out the sea-
son.
Johns Hopkins knocked Western Mary-
land from the unbeatens 21-14. Could
Hopkins beat Newark High Sch'ool?
Maybe in lacrosse?
Georgia Southern edged past Elon 27-21.
Some team from the Atlantic 10 is going to
get Georgia Southern in this year's tourna-
ment and my guess is it will be Villanova.
Delaware State stung Norfolk State 43-
13 to go 4-5 on the season. Norfolk State
had minus 85 yards rushing. I guess you
had to be there.
Suny Brockport defeated Wesley College
22-18 in spite of a 28-for-54 and 372 yards
passing performance from Wolverine quar-
terback Jason Visconti.
PRO FOOTBALL - The Ravens are
winning worse than ugly and ain't it great.
Baltimore is the junkyard dog of the NFL
and hosts Cleveland this Sunday in a must-
win game if they want a showdown with
Pittsburgh Dec. 16 for all the AFC Central
marbles. How come playing marbles isn't
fun anymore?
Philadelphia is at Dallas on Sunday and,
even though Dallas is much-improved or
the league is worse than the WFL, the Ea-
gles should dominate.
Look for Freddie Mitchell to have the
much-ballyhooed breakout game, and Duce
Staley to actually get tackled once or twice
unlike high-stepping he did through the
Vikings defense.
Washington at Denver after scoring only
three points against San Diego is a great
game for any fan suffering from sleep dep-
rivation.
Jacksonville at Pittsburgh is no automatic
for the Steelers after the Jags 30-13 win
over Cincinnati. Jacksonville is a scary of-
fensive team when everybody is healthy,
which means what I'm not sure.
Indy at New Orleans and maybe another
chance to hear perfect Peyton drop the F
word in a press conference.
What makes-Archie, Peyton and now Eli
great athletic quarterbacks? All three were
a recessive gene away from playing clarinet
in the band - of course, there's nothing
wrong with that.
Go long and I'll hit you! Go on now, gift
